Domaining Revenue Model
May 27, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · 2 Comments
In a previous domaining revenue model article we stated that revenue from domain names aka domain parking, was one of the three principal components of the domaining revenue model. For ease of reference we are restating our definition here.
Domain Parking (Revenue from Domain Names) – an individual domain name or a portfolio of domain names are parked on a server as one page websites until they are required for future use, either for selling or developing. These one page websites are monetised with Google Adsense or similar advertising before they are sold. There is an added benefit in that good generic domain names are appreciating at the approximate rate of 22% per annum.
So what are the advantages and disadvantages of the domain parking component of the Domaining Revenue Model?
Advantages of the Domaining Revenue Model component “Domain Parking”:
- Low Cost Entry or No Cost Entry Fee;
- Easy to Set up and Manage;
- Does Not Require Much time to Maintain i.e. not time or labor intensive;
- Literally Set Up and Forget. Just Collect your monthly earnings;
- Passive Income;
- Useful Strategy to “Battle” test the popularity of your Domain Name (s);
- Earnings potential more than covers the annual domain renewal fees;
Disadvantages of the Domaining Revenue Model component “Domain Parking”:
- Income Potential Not Maximised;
- You get only a maximum of 80% of the Revenue generated;
- You get only PPC Income;
- No Affiliate Income possibilities;
- No CPA Income possibilities;
- No Text Link Income possibilities;
- No Subscription Income possibilities;
- Impossible to Build a list or develop a relationship with your visitors;
- Parking Company Restrictions on driving traffic to the website;
- Limited SEO Optimization possibilities; and
- Little or No Search Engine Traffic;
- Low Return on Investment;
- Requires a Large Portfolio to generate any meaningful income;
In addition to the above disadvantages, the Domaining Revenue Model component “Domain Parking” carries a number of risks including:
- Possibility of being penalised by the search engines for lack of meaningful content;
- Potential risk of losing your domain name (s) due to possible future legislation as proposed by Senator Snowe Bill’s proposed “Anti-Phishing Consumer Protection Act”;

Domain registration starts with searching for a domain name – the chosen name for your site on the web. In other words, the ‘www.yourname.com’ that people will type in their browsers and see at the top of every page of your website. Obviously, it’s important to choose a good domain name.
Many people don’t realise, but the web has a lot more domain registration top level domain (TLD) possibilities than just .com addresses.
.com is the most popular choice for domain registration and is primarily intended for companies – the ‘com’ is short for ‘commercial’. Alternatives include .org (organisations) and .net (intended for Internet service providers). There are some domain registration addresses that have been made available more recently, such as .name (for individuals), .biz (for companies), .mobi (for mobile phones) and .asia for individuals and companies in Asia.
Domain registration isn’t at all expensive any more, but as millions of generic names are already taken, it can feel very difficult to come up with a suitable domain name for your website. Here are some domain registration comments:
- First of all, you may have difficulty finding single words and anything under four letters long. There are people monitoring these domains constantly and buying them the moment they become available. But, similar to panning for gold, valuable nuggets do appear from time to time. So keep on trying;
- The best thing to do is to come up with a series of two or three words or so that describes your website. You’ll need to think around this problem. If you’re registering a business website, you might want to include something in the domain name to distinguish it from other businesses with the same name – the town where you’re based, for example;
- If you want to get ranked high in search engines, it’s worth considering what your potential customers would be searching for when you’re registering your domain name;
- Try to avoid using hypens and numbers as domain names with these two features are generally worth less;
Once you’ve made a list of domain registration names you’re happy with, the next step is finding a registrar: godaddy.com, namecheap.com and registerfly.com are some of the cheapest out there right now. Really, anything over $10 per domain is now considered expensive. So, shop around.
When you type your chosen domain registration name (s) into a registrar’s search box, they will tell you whether or not each domain is available, and how much it would cost. Prepared to be surprised by some of the truly obscure names that are already taken, but don’t give up.
Finally, when you’re organising your domain registration, make sure to put in genuine contact details, to avoid any future potential legal and other problems.

Before you can get a website up and running, you need to have a place to put it. Paying for web site hosting is, basically, like renting a small amount of space on someone’s server and paying what it costs them to send your web pages to your customers. Fortunately for you, though, web site hosting has never been cheaper.
Many domain name companies have taken to offering you web site hosting when you buy your domain from them. This is generally an expensive option, and a bad idea – you’ll be getting few features compared to what you’re paying. Few people who are serious about web site hosting get it from the same place they get their domains.
So where should I start?
Well, that all depends on what your website is going to need. How many visitors do you expect to have? Are you going to have lots of large graphics on the site? Do you have a lot of articles or products that you want to put in a database? Do you want to have an email address at your website? On and on it goes.
Each host you look at will offer you different web site hosting combinations of features at different price points, and finding the one that’s right for you can be quite a task. Here’s a technical-to-English guide to what you should be looking for in web site hosting.
MB storage – The more MB of web site hosting storage you have, the more you can put on your website.
GB bandwidth per month – This is a limit on how much data your website can transfer each month.
MySQL databases – The number of databases your website will have to store things in. It will make it much easier for you if you have one.
PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, ColdFusion, Python, Ruby – These are all scripting languages, used to write your website. You should make sure your host offers the languages that any software you plan to use is written in. If you don’t have specific requirements, then you should be fine with just Perl and PHP.
Subdomains – These allow you to split your website into more sections than just ‘www’ – you might decide, for example, that you would people to be able to go to ’shop.yourdomain.com’ and ‘news.yourdomain.com’ and see pages there.
FTP accounts – An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account is what you’ll use to upload your website to your host. You’ll always get one of these with your web site hosting. The only situation when you’ll need more is if you want to let someone alter things on your site without giving them the master password.
POP3 accounts – POP stands for ‘Post Office Protocol’, which is just fancy-speak for email. The more POP3 accounts you get, the more email addresses you can have.

Web Site Building
May 11, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment
Once upon a time, web site building was very expensive. Now, though, you can have a site up and running for the price of a used book, if you’re frugal and careful. Getting the cheapest website you can is a great first step on the ladder, to get started on the web and see if it’s for you.
Nowadays, web site building is easy using nothing but software you can get for free – most of the best scripting languages are free, and each one has had a lot of free software built for it by hobbyists. Check out sourceforge.net, which is a big repository of free software.
You might think that free software for web site building would be less functional than paid-for software, but you’d be wrong. If you want a forum, for example, there’s no clear advantage in paying massive license fees to vBulletin (the biggest seller of forum software) instead of just installing the free phpBB. The free software gives you more flexibility, and yet comes at no cost.
Free software has become an ideological movement, for people who want to be able to modify their own software, and much of the free software out there is quickly becoming widely-used and standard. Using free software web site building doesn’t make you look cheap, because users are used to seeing it everywhere – even better, the chances are that they already know how to use it.
Depending on what kind of web site building you are planning, you could use the design templates that come with your free software – they’re usually perfectly adequate. If you don’t want to do that, then a quick look around at a site like templatemonster.com is sure to turn up something suitable for your website building that only costs a few dollars.
Finally, one of the biggest costs associated with any web site building is marketing it – whether you’re planning to pay for banner ads or ads in search engines, website marketing is a big cost. You can save money on web site building though, by becoming involved in online communities that you think might be interested in your website. The biggest free marketing technique out there is SEO (search engine optimisation), which is when you organise your web site building in a way that makes it more attractive to search engines, getting you targeted visitors for free.
Once you’ve built your budget website, you may need to upgrade it later on when you start to get lots of visitors. You might wish to pay a professional designer to improve your design, but in most cases the path from a budget website to a big one isn’t all that costly either.

Domain Name Registration
May 10, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment
Domain name registration is carried out by a domain name registrar – an organisation that holds the central database records for all the domains they administer. They are often government owned or sponsored.
In the domain name registration process you have to first choose a name and a Top Level Domain (TLD) extension such as .com or .net etc. Your chosen domain name and extension will be allocated by the domain registrars on a “first come, first served” basis. In other words, the registrar will first check to see if that name and extension is already taken. If both the name and TLD are available the registrar will go ahead and register it. If either or both are not available, the registrar will make suggestions.
Once you have agreed on a name and TLD, the domain name registration process will then utilize a name service called Domain Name System or DNS. The DNS is a large database which resides on various computers and it contains the names and IP addresses of various hosts on the internet and various domains. The DNS is used to provide information to the Domain Name Service to use when queries are made.
The DNS simply translates friendly names to a numeric number or Internet Protocol (IP) address. For example, if the name and extension you have agreed on is “www.microsoft.com” then the DNS will translate that into 198.105.232.6.
Your domain name will be “unique” to you and you only and will be used to identify and locate your computer on the Internet by providing a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses which are translated by Domain Name Servers (DNS) into numeric Internet Protocol (IP) addresses used by the Internet.

Web Hosting
May 9, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · Leave a Comment
The purpose of a website is to spread the word about you and/or your business and web hosting is a service that allows you to publish your website on the Internet.
Firstly you need to “create” your website using any number of programs, by using HTML code or a web template. You can then save this website onto your hard disk drive or a disk and then FTP it (upload it) on to the DNS servers of your web hosting comoany.
Once you are ready to go online, you need to make sure you have properly thought out and organised your web hosting. Even if you are just a regular non-business person, a web hosting service can help you find a place on the Internet. You can use the web pages you create to share your ideas, creative work, or photos. Many people see their website as personal expressions and some people even use their website to meet new people.
There are many companies that provide both free and paid web hosting services although paid website hosting services are usually more reliable and offer you more options.
Today, there are many web hosting service providers and you are spoilt for choice. The major difference in the various providers is really in the features they offer which, obviously is reflected in the price quoted.
When deciding on your web hosting provider, you need to decide on a number of important issues including:
- how much you want to spend;
- your current and planned size of your web site;
- anticipated volume of traffic both short-term and medium-term;
- service provider reliability and track record;
- the number and size of the eMail addresses available;
- language and other scripts such as, cgi, perl or php,fantastico;
- cron jobs;
- customer service response times;
- forum & conferencing facilities;
If you run a business, finding a reliable web hosting service to manage your web page(s) is especially important, since you need to make your customers comfortable visiting your website and you need to ensure that there are no slowdowns or down times when a customer wants to access at your company information.

If you don’t have a website, then you might not realise all the great things they can do for you. Maybe you think there wouldn’t be any point, because your business is too small – or maybe you don’t even have a business! Perhaps you think it’d be a lot of work for little reward. Or maybe you paid big bucks for a site back during the dot-com ‘boom’ days, only to get nothing but trouble out of it and shut it down a year later.
Whatever your situation is, though, you must build a web site, and I’m here to tell you why:
- Generate Revenue from Domain Development;
- People Will Look for You Online;
- Websites Cost Next to Nothing;
- Websites are Great Advertising;
- A Website is a Worldwide Presence;
- Your Website Can Save You Time ;
Generate Revenue from Domain Development – a major part of the domaining revenue model is developing a website as a business including web site creation and building, web site design, web hosting and website promotion.
There’s a lot of money on the web, and it’s not hard to get some – the longer you’re online for, the bigger your share can get. If you have something to sell, you can sell it worldwide. Doing business online eliminates almost every overhead there is: all you need to do is have the goods.
People Will Look for You Online – Sooner or later, someone’s going to type your name into a search engine. What do you want them to find? Nothing? These are people who want to find you, and if you don’t have a website then you’re letting them down – they expect you to be online. For many people, you might as well not exist if you can’t be found with a search engine. Not having a website is like not bothering to get listed in the phone book. Whether it’s customers or old school friends you’re hoping for, very few people are going to find you if you aren’t online.
Websites Cost Next to Nothing – Once, it cost a lot to run a website – but those days are long gone. There are ‘pay as you go’ services out there now charging as little as $1 per gigabyte of bandwidth. If you’re sensible about the size of your pages, that dollar could last you a whole month, or even longer! If you don’t want to pay for design, it’s never been simpler to do it yourself, or find free software to do it for you. Really, it’s never been cheaper to have a website than it is today.
Websites are Great Advertising – Whatever you’re advertising – your services, your products, or just yourself – a website is a great way to do it. Every other kind of advertising going costs a premium, especially if you want to target a specific kind of person, and there’s no guarantee that they’re paying attention. Websites are like brochures that are free to reproduce, interactive, and quickly distributed to people who are already looking for them. No advertising medium even comes close to the ease-of-use and effectiveness of a website.
A Website is a Worldwide Presence – On the web, it doesn’t matter whether someone is next door to you or on the other side of the world – they can see your website just the same as anyone else can, at no extra cost to you or to them. Phone and post both cost enormous amounts long-distance, but a website lets you send information anywhere without any extra effort or expense. You can make friends and contacts in places you’ve never been and will never go – suddenly, working globally is no more effort than working locally.
Your Website Can Save You Time – Giving out information takes time, whether it’s on the phone, or in brochures, or even if it’s just emailing your family. Websites are designed to save you time. All your family and friends can read your online diary (known as a weblog), but you only have to write it once. Customers can see your whole product catalogue without ever needing to talk to you or visit you. This is the power of the web: things on it are written only once, but can be downloaded endlessly – a good website runs itself, and keeps being useful to people for much longer than you’d expect.

Domaining Revenue Model
May 5, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · 9 Comments
Domaining is the art and science of buying and selling domain names as virtual real estate investments. The Domaining revenue model consists of three principal components:
- Revenue from domain names aka domain parking;
- Revenue from “domain flipping”;
- Revenue from domain development;
Revenue from “Domain Flipping” – domain names are bought and immediately offered for sale at a profit. Domain flipping is relatively easy as it requires no work other than the purchase of a “memorable” domain name or a domain name that is easy to remember or with a nice ring to it. Sometimes, to maximise profits, it may be beneficial to partially develop the domain before offering it for sale.
Revenue from Domain Development – domain development is the broad term used to describe all aspects of developing a website as a business including web site creation and building, web site design, web hosting and website promotion.

Domain Names Flip For Big Bucks
May 3, 2008 by Stephen S Alison · 4 Comments
Domain Names Flip for Big Bucks – Buying and Selling domain names or “Domain Flipping” has become a tremendously popular way of earning money. Everyday people are buying and selling domain names they think will have strong commercial appeal.
Sometimes domains have just the right sound, sometimes they have consistent traffic, and others have great content and products.
The key is to find good domain names and move on it before someone else does.
So what makes good domain names?
It helps when the domain relates to a popular trend like music, games, or movies. The domain name speculator must be careful, though, to avoid any domain name that could be considered a trademark or copyright infringement. If they fail to heed the warnings, they will usually find themselves on the short end of a lawsuit and lose the domain name and a lot of money in the long run.
One of the easiest ways to make money with a domain is to generate consistent traffic. If the domain name has a popular, generic sound to it, it’s quite possible it may generate a lot of type-in traffic.
Type-in traffic is when surfers simply type a common word or phrase directly into their web browser. Now you may assume that most people use search engines to find what they are looking for, but a recent UCLA study reported 86% of online consumers reach websites though type-in navigation. With all of this free traffic, it’s easy for investors in domain names to sell even a relatively new site within a matter of days or weeks.
A quick search of domains on auction sites such as eBay will reveal a vast list of domain names available for purchase, usually at huge multiples of the original cost. Domain names that were originally purchased by a savvy investor can be sold for over $500.00 in three days or less.
And at larger domain auction houses such as Moniker.com, the best domain names available can fetch upwards of $50,000.00. In fact, in early 2007, this auction house sold NewYork.info for $70,000.00 and Travel.info for $116,000.00.
Of course, a good domain name doesn’t have to end in .com anymore either. With the increasing diversity of domain name extensions and the growth in the wireless market, domain name extensions seem to matter less and less.
So if you want to get in while the going is good, start brainstorming domain names, and who knows, maybe you will be the next person to flip a million dollar domain name.
